There is a small girl I know and her name is Abigail, but everyone calls her Abbey. She has freckles and short hair and she drinks only chocolate milk. She has a constant companion and his name is Blanket. Blanket is purple and has just a little bit of blue and green in the edge, just a little. Blanket and Abbey are always together, and they have a tremendous amount of fun. The Mommy and The Daddy don't always think that what they do is funny, but they're too old, they just don't know what fun is.
Abbey has a bigger sister, Madeline, mostly everyone calls her Maddy. She is a pain, a big one. She thinks she's a princess, a zany princess, and is so annoying. She is a dancer and is always making Abbey do dance moves and things. Which sometimes is pretty cool, but Abbey would much rather just do tumbling.
Abbey and Blanket went outside to enjoy the fabulous weather on Sunday. They went to the backyard and sat down on the swing.
"Why do I have to sit on the same swing as you, can't I have my own swing?" Blanket pouted. This was a common problem. Blanket always wanted to do his own thing.
"No, you have to sit with me. If I give you your own swing, The Mommy and The Daddy will think that I'm lonely and using you as a substitute friend, then they'll either send out Maddy or they'll come out and play with me, either way, our plans will be ruined."
"Fine, but do I have to sit on your lap? It's so babyish, can I at least hang off to the side. If I close my eyes and squint, then it's almost like I have my own seat."
"Okay, geez." Abbey hung blanket on the side of the swing and rolled her eyes.
They sat together on the swing for a few more minutes and then Blanket hopped off, stretched and ran towards the old willow tree that was half dead. He started to climb up and was nearly halfway up before Abbey got there.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Abbey called.
"I'm doing math problems, what do you think I'm doing? I'm climbing this tree. I'm going to get all the way to the top and then swing down these viney things just like a monkey. Watch."
Abbey folded her arms and waited. This ought to be good. But if it worked, then she was next.
She waited.
And waited.
"Hello, Mr. Awesome, what are you doing now. I want to go next, so could you move it along?"
"Ummm, there seems to be a small problem." came a wavery voice from the tree.
"I forgot that I'm not a fan of tall places. I really like the ground, and the earth and the grass and all things solid and not high."
"O.....M......G! Are you serious? How am I supposed to get you down? I can't reach you, you'll just have to jump." Abbey stomped her foot and yelled up at Blanket.
"Have you completely lost your mind? Can you see the tree? Can you see that I am currently higher in the air than like an airplane? Jumping from this tree would be like certain death." Blanket shouted this down to Abbey and then began muttering under his breath, and Abbey could only hear certain words, "crazy" and "out of her mind" and "what did she think he was, some circus performer."
Well, now Abbey only had one choice. She had to ask The Parents for help.
She walked toward the house, leaving Blanket calling out to her. She walked slowly through the garage and opened the door. The Daddy was playing a computer game.
"Daddy, I need your help outside. Blanket climbed the tree and he was going to swing on the vines to get down but now he's afraid and won't jump down."
The Daddy turned around and looked at Abbey with The Face. The "are you for real kid" face. Great.
"Let me get my shoes on and I'll be out in a minute."
Abbey turned and went back outside to where Blanket was now peering down through the vines waiting for someone to come.
Abbey shouted up at Blanket, "I hope you're happy. The Daddy is coming out, and he is not happy."
Blanket said, "Oh thank goodness, I thought I was doomed."
"Abigail, how in the world did you get your blanket all the way up in this tree? Why did you put your blanket all the way up here. Now I have to get out the ladder, maybe I should leave the blanket up there."
"Daddy, I didn't put it there, Blanket climbed the tree. He's a very good climber because he can wrap himself all the way around. I think actually that he's a much better climber than George even, but now he's scared. I tried to get him to jump but he wouldn't."
The Daddy climbed the ladder and got down blanket, there was a weird moment when Blanket refused to let go of the vines, and Daddy had to pull and pull, but Blanket eventually let go and Daddy climbed down.
"Okay Abigail, how about you and I rake some leaves?" Daddy suggested.
Abbey looked at blanket, "Way to go genius. Hope you like being a leaf carrier."

Oh my Gosh! Don't tell Maddy, but I think I like this one even better than the others!! I laughed out loud a few times.... the first being, "If I close my eyes and squint, then it's almost like I have my own seat." You caught Duffy perfectly--annoyed at being interrupted, but willing to do *anything* to make his daughter happy. I loved it times a gabillion!!!!
