We were at a softball game tonight. Abbey had just creamed the ball and made it to first base. I saw her say something to the first base coach, and they both looked at her leg. I couldn't see what they were looking at, but I heard her say "blood." I assumed that her scratches from driveway basketball had started oozing, so I wasn't overly concerned, but then Matt (1st base coach) came over and asked for a towel to wipe off Abbey's leg, then I saw. She had a small puncture and blood running down her leg.
No one else was worried, for anyone else, a quick swipe of antiseptic wipe would have been fine, and by the time she got to third base, she'd have a great scab going. Not Abbey. So I hustled out with a band aid, and put it on, all the time my heart was racing.
I know she isn't going to bleed out from a leg wound the size of a popcorn kernel, but when she bleeds, it reminds me how fragile she is. It reminds me that I could have paid closer attention to Izzy's symptoms. It reminds me that kids do die.
So she got her band aid, she finished the game with 4 hits and several tremendous defensive plays. She had a great night.
She also required another band aid, and as I write this 4 days later, she still doesn't have a scab but it is dry and healing. I guess on the plus side, I don't have to worry about her picking the scab to leave a scar.

Abbey is going to be a strong girl, just like her mommy! :)
