Abbey and Blanket were going on vacation. It was Thursday morning and by the afternoon, they'd be on the road and headed to the East Coast. Woo hoo!!! Their suitcase was packed and they were going to day care one last day while The Parents worked.
"Okay, I have all my clothes and swimsuits in the suitcase. Mommy put my activity bag in the car already. Wait, what are those bags?" Abbey stopped at the top of the stairs, because at the bottom she could see a pile of her backpacks. A pile of her backpacks that were bulging full of stuff that she had not packed.
"Abigail Duffy!" Mommy yelled up the stairs "you can't take all of these bags, there isn't room in the van for all of the people and all of these bags. What do you have in here?"
Abbey looked quickly at Blanket who looked sheepish and whispered, "well I figured that you guys would leave me in the car a bunch, so I packed extra books, and the Polly Pockets, and movies, and I packed the yoga mat so I could exercise, and my art supplies so I could paint scenes from our trip, please don't let her unpack them. Please."
Abbey rolled her eyes and walked downstairs. "Yes, Mommy, did you yell for me?"
"I already put your activity bag in the car, what is all this stuff? You cannot possibly think that you are taking all of these Polly Pockets, A-there isn't room, B-we'll be picking them up forever, C-No way, they stay here."
"It's okay, I will put these back upstairs, I'm good with just one bag."
Abbey carried her bags back upstairs and set them down in front of Blanket.
The rest of the day passed uneventfully, and before they knew it, Mommy picked everyone up from day care, and they loaded up the car, and they went to the bathroom and they plugged in the GPS, and they stopped to get gas, and they went back home because Mommy forgot something, and then they were on the road.
Abbey and Blanket huddled in the backseat watching for license plates. They planned on winning the family license plate challenge, and sure enough before they even got to Havana, they were in the lead with 3 states. Woot!
They spent the night in Indianapolis and hit the road again early in the morning. Blanket was pretty crabby because there was only 1 television in the hotel room and The Daddy wouldn't let anyone watch anything except Sportscenter. Blanket hated sports.
They had been driving for almost an hour when Blanket poked Abbey hard in the side. "Hey, I think I forgot the vacation journal your mom bought. It's not in the bag. How can we keep track of everything that happens without the notebook. Oh my gosh, I've already forgotten what I ate for breakfast, what did I eat? See, this is why your mom is a genius. She thought ahead to get a means of keeping track of this stuff. Shoot, where is it?" Blanket was now throwing everything out of the activity bag and mumbling.
"Blanket, it's fine, here's some paper, just write it down and then we'll put those in the notebook when we find it, or buy another one. It's not a big deal." Abbey handed the notepad she'd taken from the hotel desk to Blanket.
"Are you mad? It is a big deal. The notebook had a puppy on it. A cute puppy, The papers were all wound together so they wouldn't get lost. It was the perfect size for carrying in our purse. It was perfect and now it's gone," Blanket wailed throwing the notepapers in the air.
Abbey looked at the clock on the dashboard, it was only 10:30, nowhere near time to stop for lunch, but she knew Blanket, and she knew what his tantrums were like, if she didn't head it off know, she'd be doomed to an entire day of moping and pouting. So she put her head down and said, "Mommy, we have a problem, I lost my vacation diary and Maddy's writing in hers and I really want mine, can we stop please?"
And after 15 minutes of stubbornly insisting that she needed the diary and even a few tears, they were turning onto an exit while the Daddy mumbled and grumbled, she only caught a few words, and one of them was definitely unbelievable.
Mommy took her into the store and they picked out a notebook, Mommy was definitely not a happy hand holding, notebook buyer, but she really had no idea what it would be like to have to spend the whole day with a pouting Blanket.
"Mommy, thank you for the notebook. I promise to be more careful."
Abbey got into the car, sat in her seat and buckled up. Blanket was petting the cover of the notebook.
Abbey looked seriously at Blanket. "The memories you put in here had better be amazing thoughts that land us on the best seller list or I'm leaving you at the next rest stop."
Blanket slouched down in his seat and they hit the highway again.
