Dear Madeline Elaine,
Today is the first day of 5th grade for you. What an exciting year ahead for you. I know that you’re disappointed that you’ve missed out on having Genna or Kacie in your class this year, but you are so good at making friends, I know you’ll have a great year and have at least 1 or 2 new BFFs before the end of the first quarter.
I hope that this year is easier for you than last year, and that we make it through the year with no friend/girl drama. The problems you had with Riley were hard and horrible and it broke my heart to see you struggle with that. I remember how hard it was to have a friend be made at me and stop being my friend for no good reason. It happened to me in the 5th grade and 6th grade, and looking back now, I can see that those girls were really not very good friends, but at the time it felt like if I didn’t make them like me, that I would be totally friendless and alone. Now I know that there would have been other people that I could have been friends with if only I had tried. So remember, you cannot control what other people do, you can only control what YOU do. So be who you are, and the really special, important people will like you because you are you. And you’re pretty awesome.
I’m pretty sure you’ve noticed by now, that boys are cute. Some boys anyway. Boys are funny, boys can be cute and charming and fun to flirt with, but they’re just a distraction for entertainment. They aren’t more important than you. It’s important for you to be yourself and never ever ever try to be something different to make a boy like you. You are gorgeous and funny and smart and talented and any boy would be lucky for you to speak to him let alone go out with him. So if some dumb boy makes you feel like you’re not pretty or special, then he’s clearly an idiot and you should move on. And you can tell me and we’ll make fun of him and have ice cream and soda and we’ll imagine all the horrible ways we can make him pay. It might seem like he’s the greatest cutest boy ever, but trust me; you’ll end up kissing a lot of frogs before you find your Prince Charming. I had many boyfriends before I finally found Daddy, and you’ll have many boyfriends before you find your true love, so don’t settle for some jerkface who doesn’t treat you with love and respect.
And the most important part of this whole letter, my promise to you. You and I have a very special relationship. You are my very first baby girl and you stole my heart the very first time I heard your heart beat. I love talking to you and I love listening to you. That will never ever change. Every time you confide in me I feel honored and special that you can talk to me and tell me your secrets and thoughts and hopes and wishes. I promise that even though I may not always like what you have to say, I will always listen and help you if you want my advice and keep my thoughts to myself if that’s what you want. And even if you tell me something hard that I don’t want to hear, and even if I’m mad or hurt or disappointed, we will work it out and I will love you as much as I always have and always will. I promise.
Happy 1st day of 5th grade beautiful freckleface!!!
