This is the stuff you like

2 months

Today is July 20th. It has been 2 months since our baby girl died. It doesn't seem possible that it's been that long, and then again, it seems like an eternity since I held her. We have had a ridiculously busy day. The basement flooded last night and we had a ton of work to get done to clean it all up. Still not done, but it's hard to stay focused. I find myself watching the clock and remembering all the things we were doing that day. It doesn't even end at 12:52 when she died. I'll remember forever when we had to tell the girls, when we argued with the coroner about the autopsy, the drive home, calling Julia to tell her. I find myself trailing off mid-sentence because my mind wandered to her. I just stare at her picture. I did discover today that I can look at her pictures and smile. I'm not done crying yet, but her picture made me smile today. The thing I can get over yet is how unfair it is. It is not fair. I want to jump up and down and scream at...

Blanket Goes to The Sister's Dance Competition

Blanket was standing in front of her with his hands raised, in disbelief, or to stop her, she wasn't exactly sure. "Hold on just a second, we are all going to Washington, Iowa to a dance competition, we are going to miss the Final 4, we won't get home until really late, and all we get to do alllll day is watch your sister's team dance?" "Yes, that's exactly what we're doing, stop complaining, when was the last time we all did something together? And besides, it'll mean we make several gas station stops which means the good chocolate milk, and candy, lots of candy and probably some McDonald's too." Bracketology Duffy style

This year I decided it would be brilliant to have a family bracket challenge. I printed out four copies of the NCAA men's brackets. We all filled them out, and explained that the winner got to plan one family fun night. Here is a brief recap of the conversation we had with the girls while filling out their brackets. Madeline: "So what do these little numbers mean next to the teams' names?" I say, "They indicate which team is better and more likely to win." "Well, how do they know? And if they already know who's going to win why do they play?" She then picks for her next 12 picks, the top ranked team. Sensing a trend, I say, "You know, it's not always the best ranked team who wins, sometimes there is an upset and the lower ranked team wins."
